Early Winter in Glacier
National Park Nov. 2000
|
|
Photos & Story by Jan Krause Dated: Nov. 2000 Going-to-the-Sun Road is now closed for the season on the west side at Lake McDonald Lodge, but there are still numerous spots where you can enjoy the solitude and beauty of Glacier National Park in winter. Last Sunday was a perfect day, with temperatures around 40 degrees, blue skies and bright sunlight. We pulled over at a turnout along Lake McDonald, took our sleeping bag pad (great for sitting on top of snow), a thermos of hot tea and some homemade cookies, and sat listening to the water gently lap against the shore. All was quiet, and no one was near to disturb our tranquility. How lucky we are to live so close to such a special place. |

It constantly amazes us how many people in the valley rarely take advantage of all that Glacier has to offer in any season. Going-to-the-Sun Road beyond Lake McDonald Lodge is accessible to cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and walkers. The Johns Lake Loop trail is a good choice in the winter. Stop at the Visitor Center at Apgar (open on weekends) for more information. If you'd like to visit Glacier National Park more often, be sure to buy an annual pass. For only $20, your family can have unlimited access to this gem for an entire year. What a bargain! Top right: Looking back across Lake McDonald toward Apgar.
Aboveleft: From the woods along Sun Road looking down through the trees at Lake McDonald. Above right: Apgar Creek meanders through a dense stand of trees, some of which are deadfalls. Lower left: Carry something waterproof to sit on, something hot to drink and a snack to eat, and just sit and listen to the sounds of Glacier. I can't think of a better way to spend a winter day. |
